Today I wanted to feature an amazing organization that is working hard for the welfare of companion animals in the Canadian Arctic. Iqaluit Humane Society operates in Iqaluit, Nunavut.
The Iqaluit Humane Society is a non-profit, community-based, completely volunteer run and operated organization, which functions solely based on donations. As per their mandate, they are: “dedicated to saving the lives of companion animals, promoting the humane treatment of companion animals, educating the public about animal behaviour and care, and being of service to our community.”
What is so special about this rescue is their spirit, perseverance and dedication to their cause. In August 2011, due to the lack of volunteers, the shelter was forced to close their boarding facility. However, this did not stop them. During the process of transferring their rescue animals to other no-kill facilities, they came across SPCA of Western Quebec. Within few short weeks, the Quebec shelter was able to find new homes for the Northern dogs and out of this success the DOG RUN was born. Every Tuesday the Canadian North airlines pick up dogs that are ready to be transferred and fly them South. The program has been an amazing success and helped to save 250 dogs, since August 2011.

My husband and I adopted one of those dogs and are so happy we did. What lucky dogs to have such dedicated people looking out for their best interests.
There is an almost overwhelming need for the services of the Iqaluit Humane Society. Until you see the desperate conditions of some of these northern dogs, you can’t imagine it. Kudos to these volunteers. Donate, donate, donate — you couldn’t find a better use of your charitable dollars than this operation.
