Rocco’s sensitive stomach and epilepsy has turned buying treats and chews into an obstacle course of label reading, internet research, vet advice and trial and error. The list of “banned” ingredients is endless and ever-growing. I avoid anything that is synthetic, contains grains, meat by-products or additives, such as artificial colour or flavour.
Previously, I’ve avoided deer and elk antlers as I found them to be very dense and as such cause unnecessary wear to Rocco’s teeth or possibly chip a tooth. However, I few weeks ago I was perusing the dog chew section at the pet store and found deer antler chews that have been cut lengthwise, exposing the soft tissue inside. I decided to give it a try, and so far both Rocco and I have been very happy with the purchase.
Antlers are a very healthy alternative to other dog chews. They are non-messy and odor free. They don’t chip or splinter as easily as bone, and when they do chip, the edges are smoother, so there is less risk of injury to the mouth or esophagus. They are a natural source of phosphorus, calcium, iron, sodium, and manganese. And of course the are a great source of entertainment for your dog.

I bought an elk antler for Dakota the Corgi several months ago. She mostly ignores it, but sometimes she pulls it out of the toy basket and chews on it for a few minutes. Can’t decide if she likes it or not, or is just curious. Maybe she thinks it will taste more interesting this time?

That’s interesting, I wonder if you split it in half would she like it better? I would also try soaking it in water for a couple of hours to make it softer.

Thanks for the info…I’ve always wondered about those antlers. Guess maybe I’ll try some on my pup. Happy Weekend!
